Fairy Lights and Lanterns: Evening Decor for a Farmhouse
· 5 min read· by Farmhouses Hyderabad Team
A few strings of warm lights can turn a dark farmhouse lawn into the best part of the party. What to buy, where to hang it, and how to keep it safe.
Fairy lights and lanterns are the cheapest way to make a farmhouse evening feel special. Warm-white string lights in the trees, a canopy over the sit-out and a few lanterns along the path will transform a dark lawn in under an hour, as long as you check the power points, keep anything that plugs in well away from the pool and follow the farmhouse's decoration rules.
Daytime decor at a farmhouse is mostly about balloons and banners. Evening decor is different: it is about light, and it shapes how the whole night feels.
Start with a walk-through at sunset
Lighting plans made from photos rarely survive the real property. If you can, arrive an hour or two before dark and walk the space with the caretaker. Note:
- Where people will actually sit after dinner, whether the lawn, the sit-out, the gazebo or near the pool.
- Which areas are already lit, and which go completely dark.
- Where the power points are, and whether they are indoor or weatherproof outdoor sockets.
- Trees, pergolas and railings you can tie lights to without nails or tape.
Most farmhouses have rules about decorations: no nails, no adhesive tape on painted walls, no confetti in the pool. These vary by farmhouse, so ask the host before you start hanging anything.
What to buy
| Type | Best use | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Plug-in string lights (warm white) | Trees, canopies, railings | Need extension boards; keep connections off wet grass |
| Battery fairy lights | Tables, jars, cake area, near water | Carry spare batteries |
| Solar garden lights | Paths and steps | Need a sunny day to charge |
| LED candles | Dinner tables, sit-out | Safe around kids and fabric |
| Paper or fabric lanterns | Hanging over seating areas | Use LED bulbs inside, never real flames |
Warm white almost always looks better outdoors than cool white or fast-flashing multicolour modes. If your lights have flashing settings, set them to steady for most of the evening; it is kinder on the eyes and better for photos.
Where to hang them for the most effect
A canopy over the main seating
Run four or five strands from a central point, such as a tree, pole or pergola, out to the edges of your seating area. This creates a "ceiling" of light that makes an open lawn feel like a room. It is the single most effective setup if you only have time for one.
Wrapped tree trunks
Moinabad is known for its mango orchards, and many farmhouses there and elsewhere have big shady trees on the property. Spiralling lights up two or three trunks near the lawn adds depth without much effort. Do not climb trees to reach high branches; use a step ladder only if the host has one and is happy for you to use it.
The sit-out or gazebo
Drape lights along the railings and roof edge. Our guide to farmhouses with a sit-out and gazebo explains why these covered spaces are so useful for evening events.
Paths and steps
Line the path from the house to the lawn and any steps with solar lights or LED lanterns. This is about safety as much as looks, as guests walking back from the lawn at night should be able to see where they are going.
The cake or photo corner
A curtain of fairy lights behind the cake table doubles as a photo backdrop. See our DIY photo booth guide for how to light it for good pictures.
Power and safety
A farmhouse is not a banquet hall with an electrician on call, so take care:
- Keep plug-in lights and extension boards well away from the pool and kids' pool. Near water, use battery-powered lights only.
- Do not run cords across walkways where people will trip; tape them down only on surfaces where the host allows it, or route them along edges.
- Lift connections off the grass, especially if the lawn has been watered or it has rained.
- Do not overload a single socket with chains of extension boards.
- Ask whether the farmhouse has power backup, and which circuits it covers, in case of a power cut mid-party.
- Skip sky lanterns, open-flame candles in paper lanterns and anything that could start a fire in dry grass, especially in the hot months.
Theme ideas for different occasions
- Birthdays: a light canopy over the dinner table plus a marquee-style name or number light near the cake.
- Anniversaries: soft lights around one small table set apart on the lawn, with LED candles.
- Diwali or Karthika Masam gatherings: rows of LED diyas along steps and walls alongside traditional diyas placed safely on stone or tile.
- Bachelorette or friends' nights: lanterns in a colour theme and a light curtain behind the seating.
Setup and takedown plan
- Untangle and test every string at home the night before. Dead strands are common.
- Label bags by area, such as "canopy", "trees" and "path".
- Start setting up about 90 minutes before sunset so you can see what you are doing.
- Assign two people to take everything down before checkout. Leaving lights in trees or ties on railings is a common cause of unhappy hosts and deposit deductions.
Find a farmhouse that glows after dark
Some properties already have good garden lighting; others are a blank canvas. Look through the evening photos on each listing, especially for birthday party farmhouses and luxury farmhouses, and if your plans include a night stay, check live availability and ask the host about decoration rules on WhatsApp or through our contact page.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put up fairy lights at a rented farmhouse?
Usually yes, but decoration rules vary by farmhouse. Ask the host about nails, tape and where you can hang things, and take everything down before checkout.
Are fairy lights safe near a farmhouse swimming pool?
Keep plug-in lights and extension boards well away from water and use battery-powered lights near the pool. Never let cords run near the pool edge.
How many fairy light strings do I need for a farmhouse lawn?
It depends on the area you want to light. Focus on the main seating area first, then add trees and paths, and test every string before you leave home.
Can we use sky lanterns at a farmhouse?
It is best to avoid them. Sky lanterns and open flames can start fires in dry fields and gardens, so stick to LED lanterns and lights.
