Getting a Big Group to the Farmhouse: Cars, Tempo Travellers and Buses
· 5 min read· by Farmhouses Hyderabad Team

Twenty people, one farmhouse outside the ORR. Here is how to choose between cars, a tempo traveller or a bus, and how to plan pickups and the ride back.
For a group of up to about a dozen, three or four cars usually work best. Once you cross fifteen or twenty people, a hired tempo traveller or a mini bus is often simpler, cheaper per head and far safer for the ride home. The right answer depends on where your guests live, which farmhouse area you pick and whether anyone will be drinking.
This guide walks through the transport decision the way a group organiser actually faces it: counting seats, choosing pickup points, checking the last few kilometres to the gate and planning the return before the party starts.
Start with a map, not a vehicle
Before you book anything, drop a pin for every household or friend cluster on one map. Hyderabad groups are rarely in one place. Half the office may be around Gachibowli and Kondapur, a few colleagues in Uppal, someone in Kompally. That spread decides everything.
- Mostly west side (Gachibowli, Kokapet, Manikonda): a farmhouse in Moinabad or Shankarpally keeps the drive to roughly 30 to 50 minutes, so cars or one shared vehicle both work.
- Mostly north and Secunderabad: Shamirpet, Medchal and Keesara are the natural pick, and the farmhouses near Secunderabad page shows the closest options.
- Split across the city: look at areas on the ORR, such as Shamshabad, so that people from different directions can use the ring road.
Pick the farmhouse area to suit where people live, then pick the vehicle. Doing it the other way round leaves someone with a two-hour ride.
Cars, tempo traveller or bus: how they compare
| Option | Works well for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Own cars | Families, small friend groups, people arriving at different times | Parking space at the farmhouse, designated drivers, convoy confusion |
| App cabs | One or two people joining late | Return cabs can be hard to find late at night outside the ORR |
| Tempo traveller | Roughly 12 to 26 people starting from one or two points | Narrow approach roads, fixed hours, driver allowance |
| Mini bus or bus | Office outings and large family functions | Turning space near the gate, unpaved last stretches |
Many groups mix these. A tempo traveller carries the main crowd while two cars go early with the food, decorations and the person checking in.
Counting seats honestly
A five-seater is a four-seater once you add a cooler, a speaker and a bag of charcoal. When you count, include:
- Children and car seats for toddlers.
- Luggage for a night stay, which takes far more space than a day trip.
- Party supplies: cake box, return gifts, cricket kit, a crate of water.
- Elderly guests who need the front seat or an easy step into the vehicle.
For a tempo traveller, ask the operator for the real seating plan and check that the luggage space at the back is not taken up by extra seats.
Pickup points and timing
One vehicle with eight pickup stops can easily turn a 45-minute drive into a two-hour morning. Keep it to two or three points along one route, ideally near a metro station or a well-known junction where people can be dropped off.
- Share the pickup points and times in the group chat at least two days ahead.
- Give a five-minute grace period at each stop, then move on. Latecomers can take a cab to the next stop.
- Name one person per stop who confirms everyone is on board.
- Tell the farmhouse caretaker your expected arrival time so the gate is open and the parking is clear.
Leaving at 8 or 9 am on a Saturday usually beats both the city traffic and the midday heat, especially in summer.
The last few kilometres
Most farmhouses sit off the main highway on smaller roads. A car manages these easily. A full-size bus may not. Before confirming a large vehicle, ask the host on WhatsApp:
- Can a tempo traveller or bus reach the gate, or does it stop on the main road?
- Is there space inside or near the gate to park it for the day?
- How many cars fit inside the compound?
Parking space varies a lot from one farmhouse to another. Our post on farmhouses with parking for many cars covers what to ask. Send the operator the exact location pin, not just the area name. "Moinabad" covers a large area, and drivers sometimes follow the wrong pin to a neighbouring property.
Plan the ride home before the first drink
This is the part groups skip, and it matters most. If alcohol is part of your evening and the host's rules allow it, decide in advance who is not drinking and will drive. Drink-driving is dangerous and illegal, and the roads back from farmhouse areas are dark, with trucks, unlit stretches and the occasional animal.
- A hired vehicle with its own driver removes the problem for most of the group.
- Agree the return time with the operator, and remember that drivers have working hours and need food and rest too.
- For a day booking, check the farmhouse's checkout time and leave yourself time to pack.
- If people are not in a state to travel, booking a night stay may be the better choice.
We cover this in more detail in getting home safely after a farmhouse party.
Small things that save the day
- Fuel up inside the city. Fuel stations thin out on some approach roads.
- Keep the caretaker's number and the booking confirmation with at least two people.
- Download the route offline, because mobile signal can be patchy near some farmhouses.
- Arrange water and a meal for hired drivers. It is basic courtesy and keeps them alert for the drive back.
- Carry a small first-aid kit and motion-sickness tablets for children on longer drives to places like Chevella or Kadthal.
Choose the farmhouse with the journey in mind
The best transport plan starts with the right location. Browse farmhouses for large groups by area, compare drive times from where your guests live, and check live availability and prices on each farmhouse page. If you are unsure whether a vehicle can reach a particular gate, ask on WhatsApp before you book.

Frequently asked questions
How many people fit in a tempo traveller for a farmhouse trip?
Tempo travellers come in different seating layouts, so ask the operator for the exact seat count and how much luggage space is left. Leave room for coolers, cake boxes and overnight bags.
Can a bus reach a farmhouse near Hyderabad?
Some can and some cannot, because many farmhouses are on narrow approach roads. Ask the host whether a bus can reach the gate and where it can park before you book one.
Is it easy to get a cab back from a farmhouse at night?
Outside the ORR, app cabs can be slow or unavailable late at night. Plan the return in advance with a hired vehicle or a sober driver.
Which farmhouse area is best for a group spread across Hyderabad?
Areas near the ORR, such as Shamshabad or Pedda Amberpet, are often easiest for groups coming from different directions. Compare drive times from each pickup point before deciding.
