Haldi and Mehendi at a Farmhouse: Planning Pre-Wedding Functions

Farmhouses make warm, photogenic venues for haldi and mehendi. Here is how to plan the space, vendors, timings and clean-up for both functions.

More Hyderabad families are moving their haldi and mehendi out of crowded apartment terraces and function halls and into private farmhouses. It is easy to see why: open lawns for marigold decor, natural light for photographs, a pool for washing off turmeric, and rooms where the bride or groom can get ready without fifty relatives watching.

Pre-wedding functions do bring their own challenges at a farmhouse, though: stains, vendors, power, parking and timing. This guide walks through each one so the days before the wedding feel festive rather than frantic.

One farmhouse or two separate bookings?

Families usually choose between three set-ups:

Set-upHow it worksGood for
Haldi in the morning, mehendi in the eveningOne long day booking at the same farmhouseSmaller guest lists and tight budgets
Mehendi evening, stay over, haldi next morningA night stay covering both functionsClose family who want to stay together
Separate daysTwo bookings, possibly two farmhousesLarge guest lists or different crowds for each

The night-stay option is especially popular: mehendi artists finish in the evening, the bride's hands dry overnight, and haldi happens the next morning with everyone already on site.

Haldi and mehendi need different spaces

These two functions look similar on a guest list but behave very differently on the ground.

Haldi: messy, joyful, outdoors

  • Location: a lawn corner or a paved area away from upholstered furniture and light-coloured walls. Turmeric stains are stubborn.
  • Seating: a low stool or decorated chair for the bride or groom, with space around for family to apply haldi.
  • Washing up: a nearby tap, bathroom or outdoor shower. Ask the host whether guests may enter the pool after haldi; many farmhouses don't allow it because turmeric affects the water and tiles.
  • Floor cover: lay a tarpaulin or old sheets under the seating area.
  • Clothing: tell guests to wear yellow or old clothes they don't mind staining.

Mehendi: seated, relaxed, often into the evening

  • Location: a covered verandah, hall or shaded lawn with good lighting for the artists.
  • Seating: plenty of chairs, cushions and small tables. Artists need comfortable working positions for hours.
  • Power: charging points, fans and lights. Confirm the farmhouse has power backup.
  • Entertainment: a dhol, dholak songs, a playlist or a small dance performance while hands dry.

Choosing the right farmhouse

When shortlisting, think in terms of guest count, distance and facilities rather than just the photos.

  • Capacity: pre-wedding functions often grow beyond the first list. If you expect 40 or more, browse farmhouses for large groups.
  • Bedrooms: at least one AC room for the bride or groom to get ready and rest.
  • Washrooms: enough for guests, plus one kept clean and reserved for the family.
  • Parking: relatives arrive in many cars. Ask how many the property fits.
  • Location: outstation relatives landing at RGI Airport can reach farmhouses in Shamshabad quickly, while Maheshwaram, just south off the Srisailam highway near Tukkuguda, offers quieter properties a little further from the airport.

Vendors and timing

A farmhouse is a venue, not an event company. You will usually coordinate your own vendors, so share the address, gate timing and a contact number with each one.

  1. Decorators need the most time. Ask the host if they can enter early or the evening before.
  2. Mehendi artists: estimate time per guest and book enough artists so the bride isn't waiting for the last cousin to finish.
  3. Photographer: schedule the bride's mehendi close-ups in daylight, and haldi in the soft morning light.
  4. Caterer: confirm whether the farmhouse allows outside catering and where food can be served and cleaned up.
  5. Music or dhol: check the farmhouse's music timings, as these vary by property.

Write all timings in one shared note and send it to every vendor and to the host.

Food for pre-wedding functions

Haldi mornings suit light, traditional food: breakfast items, fresh juices, buttermilk and sweets. Mehendi evenings can be more indulgent with chaat counters, snacks that are easy to eat while hands are drying (or that someone can feed the bride), and a proper dinner. Our guide to planning a farmhouse menu for 20 or more guests helps with quantities.

Protecting the farmhouse (and your deposit)

Turmeric, mehendi paste and marigold petals look lovely but can leave marks. To keep the host happy:

  • Agree in advance which areas will be used for haldi.
  • Cover floors and furniture near the haldi spot.
  • Keep haldi and colours out of the pool unless the host clearly allows it.
  • Sweep petals and clear decor before checkout.
  • Walk through the property with the caretaker at check-in and checkout.

Deposit amounts and rules differ by farmhouse, so read the listing carefully.

Weather and season

Telangana's calendar shapes these functions more than people expect. From March to June, afternoons are hot, so hold haldi early in the morning and keep mehendi under cover with fans running. During the monsoon, roughly June to September, plan a covered backup for both functions and ask the host whether the lawn drains well after rain. The wedding season from November to February is the most comfortable, with pleasant days and cool evenings, but it is also when farmhouses book up fastest, so lock your dates early.

A quick planning checklist

  • Fix dates with the family priest or elders first, then book the farmhouse.
  • Confirm capacity, check-in and check-out times, and early access for decorators.
  • Ask about rules on music, outside caterers, decorations and extra guests.
  • Book vendors and share the location pin.
  • Plan transport for elders and outstation guests.
  • Pack old towels, tarpaulin, safety pins, a first-aid kit and phone chargers.

Find a farmhouse for your functions

Once your dates are fixed, shortlist farmhouses by area and capacity and check live availability. If you have questions about hosting both functions at one property, get in touch through our contact page or WhatsApp before you book.

Frequently asked questions

Can we do haldi near the farmhouse pool?

Doing haldi beside the pool is common for photos, but many farmhouses don't allow turmeric in the water because it can stain tiles. Ask the host where haldi is allowed and where guests can wash.

Can haldi and mehendi be held at the same farmhouse?

Yes. Many families book a night stay with mehendi in the evening and haldi the next morning, or a long day booking with both.

Do farmhouses provide decorators and caterers?

Usually you arrange your own vendors. Some hosts can suggest local contacts, and rules on outside catering vary by farmhouse.

How early can decorators enter the farmhouse?

It depends on your booking slot and the host. Ask whether early access or an evening-before setup is possible when you book.
