Indoor Games for a Rainy Farmhouse Day
· 5 min read· by Farmhouses Hyderabad Team
Monsoon booking? Indoor games for every kind of group, from dumb charades and Mafia to carrom and kids' games, plus what to keep in a rain box.
Rain at a farmhouse does not have to ruin the day. With the right indoor games, a wet afternoon often becomes the part everyone remembers: the whole group packed into the hall, chai going round, someone failing spectacularly at dumb charades. If you are booking a farmhouse near Hyderabad between June and September, assume at least one spell of rain and pack for it.
Below are indoor games grouped by the kind of group you have, plus a simple "rain box" to keep in the car so you are never stuck scrolling phones while the lawn floods.
First, check the indoor space
Indoor games need room. Before booking for the monsoon, look at the farmhouse photos for:
- A hall or covered sit-out big enough for your whole group in one place
- Enough seating, or floor mats and a carpet
- Power backup, since rain and power cuts often arrive together
- A TV or a wall where you can project a movie
If the listing does not make this clear, ask the host on WhatsApp. For a stay where most of the time may be indoors, a farmhouse with more rooms and a proper living area is worth more than a bigger lawn.
Party games for big groups (10+ people)
Dumb charades
The undefeated champion of Indian rainy-day games. Split into two teams, act out film titles, and keep a strict timer. Mix Telugu, Hindi and English films so everyone has a fair shot.
Antakshari
Two teams, a song each, starting with the last letter of the previous one. Older relatives often dominate. Keep the volume reasonable; music and noise rules vary by farmhouse, especially late at night.
Mafia (or Werewolf)
A storytelling game of hidden roles: a few secret "mafia", a doctor, a detective and villagers trying to work out who is who. Use a deck of cards to assign roles. Works brilliantly for friend groups of eight to fifteen and can run for hours.
Pictionary on paper
No board needed. Write words on chits, draw on a notebook or a whiteboard if there is one, and race the clock.
Quiz night
One person prepares 30 questions in advance on films, cricket, Hyderabad trivia and the group's own embarrassing history. Teams of four, answers on paper, scores on a sheet.
Card and board games for small groups
Card classics
Two packs of cards cover a whole rainy day. Rummy, Bluff, Uno if you pack a deck, Donkey for kids, Sevens and Twenty-eight for the adults who take it seriously. Keep it friendly and keep score on paper.
Carrom
Some farmhouses have a carrom board; many do not. If your group loves carrom, it is worth carrying your own.
Board games
Ludo, snakes and ladders and chess for families. For friends, word games, trading games and quick party games come into their own when the power is out and phones are low.
Word games for two to five
Smaller families and couples can lean on games that need nothing but voices: Name-Place-Animal-Thing on paper, a word chain where each word starts with the last letter of the previous one, or "would you rather" questions that slowly reveal far too much about everyone. They are perfect for a covered verandah while the rain comes down on the orchard.
Games for kids stuck indoors
- Treasure hunt inside: clues hidden in rooms the host has said you can use.
- Paper boat race: fold boats indoors, then race them in the rainwater channels once the downpour eases.
- I spy and twenty questions: no props, endlessly repeatable.
- Drawing contest: "draw the farmhouse in the rain," judged by grandparents.
- Story chain: each person adds one sentence to a story. It gets very silly very fast.
Keep kids out of the pool during lightning and thunder, and away from wet, slippery tiles around it. We cover this in more depth in swimming at a farmhouse in the monsoon.
Low-key options for when energy is low
Not every rainy hour needs a game. Sometimes the best plan is:
- A movie marathon on a laptop or projector, with blankets
- Pakodi, mirchi bajji and chai made in the farmhouse kitchen, if cooking is allowed
- A long nap to the sound of rain on the roof
- Jigsaw puzzles for the patient ones
Pack a rain box
Keep this in the boot of the car for any monsoon farmhouse booking:
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Two packs of cards, Uno | Covers most groups and ages |
| A board game or two | For when everyone is tired of cards |
| Notepad, pens, chits, a bowl | Charades, Pictionary, quizzes, Mafia |
| A power bank and a torch | Power cuts are common in heavy rain |
| A small speaker | Antakshari backing and movie sound |
| Spare towels and dry clothes | Someone will get soaked running to the car |
| Mosquito repellent | Essential after rain in the countryside |

Making a rainy farmhouse day work
A few habits help the whole group stay cheerful:
- Have a rough plan B ready before you leave home, not when the first drops fall.
- Rotate games every 45 minutes or so before boredom sets in.
- Keep the floor dry near doors; wet tiles inside are as slippery as the pool deck.
- Do not attempt flooded roads to "go somewhere else." Stay put until it clears.
Book a farmhouse that works rain or shine
For monsoon dates, a night stay gives you more chances to catch the dry spells. Look at farmhouses for a night stay, or farmhouses for large groups if you need a big indoor hall. Frequently asked questions
What can we do at a farmhouse when it rains?
Indoor games like dumb charades, antakshari, Mafia, cards, carrom and quizzes work well, along with a movie and hot snacks if the kitchen can be used.
Is it worth booking a farmhouse in the monsoon?
Yes, if you plan for it. The countryside is green and cool, and a farmhouse with a good indoor hall and power backup keeps the day fun even in heavy rain.
Can we swim at a farmhouse during rain?
Avoid the pool during thunder and lightning. Light drizzle is usually fine if the host allows it and an adult is watching, but wet decks get slippery.
Do farmhouses have indoor games like carrom?
Some do, but it varies from one farmhouse to another. Ask the host or carry your own cards and board games.
