Kids' Activities at a Farmhouse Beyond the Pool
· 5 min read· by Farmhouses Hyderabad Team

The pool keeps kids happy for two hours. Here is how to fill the rest of the farmhouse day, with ideas sorted by age group and almost no equipment.
Children will happily spend two hours in a farmhouse pool, and then they will come and find you. The trick to a calm family day is having a few activities ready that suit their age, need very little kit and use what the farmhouse already has: open lawns, trees, a veranda and space to be noisy without disturbing neighbours.
Below are ideas grouped by age, plus a rough schedule that alternates active play with rest so nobody melts down by four o'clock.
Why the pool should not be the whole plan
Even the most water-loving child needs breaks. Too long in the water in the Hyderabad sun means sunburn, tiredness and crankiness, and pool time always needs an adult watching closely. Planning activities away from the water gives the supervising adults a breather and gives the kids a better day. If you are planning water play, read our pool safety guide for parents first.

Toddlers and little ones (2 to 5 years)
Small children are thrilled by simple, sensory things. Keep it short and close to the adults.
- Bubble chase on the lawn. A bottle of bubble solution buys a surprising amount of joy.
- Leaf and flower collecting. Give them a paper bag and ask for one yellow leaf, one smooth stone, one twig. Ask the caretaker which plants are fine to pick from.
- Water play in a bucket. Cups, a funnel and a bucket in the shade are as good as a pool for this age, and much safer.
- Animal spotting. Many farmhouses on the outskirts have birds, squirrels, and sometimes cows or goats nearby. Count them together.
- Nap in a cool room. Book a farmhouse with AC bedrooms if you have toddlers; an afternoon nap rescues the whole evening.
Primary school kids (6 to 10 years)
This is the age that gets the most out of a farmhouse. They want to run, compete and explore.
Outdoor ideas
- Nature treasure hunt. Write ten clues before you leave home: something rough, something that smells nice, a feather, a seed pod, a leaf bigger than your hand. Teams of two, a time limit, a small prize.
- Classic lawn games. Lagori (seven stones), kho-kho, langdi, hide and seek, and dog and the bone need nothing but a ball and some stones.
- Mini box cricket. If the farmhouse has a box cricket court, give the kids their own short match with a soft ball before the adults take over.
- Sack or spoon races. Pack a few old pillow covers and some lemons. Instant sports day.
Shaded and indoor ideas
- Rangoli with chalk on a paved area, if the host is fine with it. Chalk washes away easily.
- Paper plane contest from the veranda: longest flight, best loop, best design.
- Story circle. Each child adds one sentence to a story. It gets wonderfully silly.
Pre-teens and teenagers (11 and up)
Older kids may act bored, but they enjoy responsibility and a bit of competition.
- Put them in charge of something. Let them run the music playlist, the scoreboard for the cricket match or the evening barbecue (with an adult nearby).
- Photography challenge. Give them a list: best sunset, funniest face, best close-up of food. Judge at dinner.
- Cousins versus adults. Badminton, volleyball, carrom or a quiz. Teenagers love beating their uncles.
- Night sky watch. Away from city lights, the sky is noticeably darker. A free star-map app turns it into an activity. Our stargazing guide has more.
A sample day that balances energy
Here is a rhythm that works for most family groups on a day visit or the first day of a night stay:
- Arrival to 11 am: explore the property, treasure hunt, lawn games while it is still cool.
- 11 am to 12:30 pm: supervised pool time.
- Lunch and rest: eat in the shade, then quiet time indoors with board games, drawing or a nap.
- 4 pm onwards: races, cricket or a second, shorter pool session.
- Sunset: family photo, snacks, bubbles for the little ones.
- Evening: stories, stargazing, or a simple movie on a laptop before bed.
The midday rest matters most from March to June, when the afternoon heat can be intense. In winter, between November and February, you can stretch outdoor play much longer.
What to pack for kids' activities
| Item | Useful for |
|---|---|
| Soft ball, frisbee, skipping rope | Lawn games for every age |
| Bubble solution, chalk, crayons | Toddlers and quiet time |
| Printed treasure hunt clues, paper bags | Nature hunt |
| Cards, a board game, a small carrom | Afternoon rest and rainy days |
| Small prizes or stickers | Keeping competitions cheerful |
| Sunscreen, caps, mosquito repellent | Everyone, all day |
Some farmhouses keep a carrom board, cricket kit or outdoor games, but this varies from property to property. Check the amenities on the listing or ask on WhatsApp before you rely on them.
Safety beyond the water
- Walk the property when you arrive and point out the boundaries, the pool gate if there is one, and any areas to avoid, such as pump rooms, steep steps or the kitchen while food is cooking.
- Make sure children wear footwear on the lawn; there may be thorns or ants near the edges.
- Keep drinking water and ORS in reach. Kids often forget to drink while playing.
- Assign an adult "on duty" in shifts so supervision never becomes everyone's job and therefore nobody's.
Choosing a farmhouse that suits children
Look for a fenced lawn, a separate shallow kids' pool, shade trees and at least one AC room for naps. You can filter for these on our kids-friendly farmhouses in Hyderabad page, then compare live prices and dates on the main farmhouse listings. If home is on the eastern side of the city, farmhouses in Ghatkesar keep the drive short, which little ones will thank you for.
