Hosting Responsibly: Managing Drinks at a Farmhouse Party
· 5 min read· by Farmhouses Hyderabad Team
If drinks are part of your farmhouse party, the host carries the responsibility. A practical guide to keeping the evening fun and everyone safe.
Plenty of farmhouse parties near Hyderabad, from a birthday party to a bachelor night, include drinks, and plenty do not. If yours does, the person who books the farmhouse becomes the host, and the host carries more responsibility than they often realise: the house rules, the guests' safety, the pool, and the drive home. Hosting responsibly does not mean a dull party. It means a party nobody regrets the next morning.
This guide is for the host. It covers checking the rules and permissions, planning the drinks and food, protecting the pool, looking out for guests, and handling a guest who has had too much.
Step one: check the farmhouse rules and permissions
Alcohol rules vary by farmhouse. Some allow it with conditions, some restrict it, and some have rules about timings, glass near the pool or music volume alongside it. Read the house rules on the farmhouse page and confirm on WhatsApp before you book, not after the guest list is out.
Separately, events where alcohol is served may need permissions under local rules, particularly larger gatherings. The requirements are set by the authorities, not by us, so check what applies to your event and ask the host what they expect. Our post on music and noise rules covers the related question of volume and timings.

Step two: plan drinks the way you plan food
Good hosts treat drinks as one part of the menu, not the main event.
- Make non-alcoholic options genuinely good. Mocktails, fresh lime soda, buttermilk, juices and plenty of water. Guests who are not drinking, are driving or are pacing themselves should feel welcome, not handed a warm cola.
- Keep water everywhere — on the bar table, by the pool, by the music.
- Serve real food throughout. Starters early, a proper dinner, snacks late. Drinking on an empty stomach is where many problems start. Plan the menu before you plan the bar.
- Buy sensibly. Over-buying tends to get finished. A modest, planned quantity sets the tone.
- No pressure culture. Drinking games and "one more" pushes are how quiet guests end up unwell. Make it normal to say no.
Step three: separate the pool from the bar
The most important safety rule at any farmhouse party is simple: alcohol and swimming do not mix.
- If you have booked a farmhouse with a private pool, decide a "pool closes" time, ideally before drinks start or at sunset, and announce it in the invitation.
- Set the bar table well away from the pool.
- Keep glass away from the pool deck; use plastic or steel cups.
- Ask one sober person to keep an eye on the pool area until everyone is clearly out of it.
- If the farmhouse has a pool gate or cover, use it once swimming ends.
Our night pool party guide has more on lighting and pool supervision after dark.
Step four: name the people who stay sober
| Role | What they do |
|---|---|
| Designated drivers | Drive guests home; agreed before anyone leaves the city |
| Pool watcher | Keeps the pool safe until it is closed |
| Point of contact | Talks to the caretaker, handles any issue, keeps the emergency numbers |
These can be the same people, and they should be rewarded generously with food and gratitude. Plan the trip home before the party starts; our guide to getting everyone home safely covers that in detail. Never let anyone drive after drinking.
Write the plan into the invitation
Most misunderstandings at farmhouse parties come from guests not knowing the plan. A few lines in the invitation or the WhatsApp group save a lot of awkward moments later:
- Arrival and departure times, and that the pool closes at a set hour.
- Who is driving which car back, and that drivers stay off alcohol.
- That the farmhouse has house rules on music, drinks and extra guests, and that everyone needs to follow them.
- That non-drinkers are very welcome and there will be good options for them.
- That the group will clean up together before leaving.
Guests who know the shape of the evening relax into it, and it becomes much easier to enforce a pool closing time when everyone agreed to it a week earlier.
Looking after guests during the party
- Check in on guests who are quiet, alone or new to the group.
- Watch for anyone mixing drinks fast or drinking without eating, and gently steer them to food and water.
- Keep an eye on drinks so nobody's glass is tampered with; encourage guests not to leave drinks unattended.
- Respect people's limits and their choices to stop.
- Keep music within the farmhouse's allowed timings and volume, and be considerate of neighbours in the village.
If someone has had too much
Stay calm and kind. Move the person somewhere quiet and safe, away from the pool and stairs. Offer water and keep them sitting up or lying on their side, never flat on their back. Do not leave them alone, do not try to "sober them up" with cold showers or coffee, and do not let them drive. If they become very drowsy, cannot be woken, are breathing oddly, have a seizure or are injured, call for emergency help and get them to a hospital. Your point of contact should know the nearest hospital before the party starts.
Keeping the farmhouse and the host on your side
Caretakers have seen every kind of party. They remember the groups who kept glass away from the pool, cleaned up the bar table and left on time. Bag the bottles and cans, check the lawn for broken glass, and leave the property as you found it. Many farmhouses take a security deposit, and damage or rule breaks can affect it, so read the terms on the farmhouse page.
A good party, well hosted
The best compliment a host gets is not "that was wild" but "that was great, everyone had fun and got home fine". When you are ready to plan, browse farmhouses near Hyderabad, read each one's house rules, and confirm the details on WhatsApp before you send out the invitations.
