Why Book a Private Farmhouse Instead of a Public Picnic Spot
· 5 min read· by Farmhouses Hyderabad Team

Parks and public picnic spots are free or cheap, but a private farmhouse gives your group space, a pool and control. Here's an honest comparison.
Hyderabad has no shortage of public picnic options: lakeside parks, gardens, viewpoints and resorts with day passes. They're easy and often cheap. So why do so many families and friend groups book a private farmhouse instead? The short answer is control. With a private farmhouse you get the whole property, the pool and the lawns to yourselves, on your timetable.
That doesn't make public spots a bad choice. This guide compares the two honestly, so you can choose the right one for your next outing.
The big difference: shared vs whole-property
At a public picnic spot you share every square metre with strangers. Seating, shade, washrooms and parking are first come, first served. At a private farmhouse, the gate closes behind your group. Nobody else uses the pool, plays on the lawn or queues for the washroom during your booking.
That one difference shapes almost everything else: how relaxed the kids are, whether the elders are comfortable, and whether you can actually hear each other talk.

Side-by-side comparison
| What matters | Public picnic spot | Private farmhouse |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy | Shared with the public | Your group only |
| Swimming | Usually none, or a crowded shared pool | Many farmhouses have a private pool |
| Washrooms | Public, variable cleanliness | Private, inside the property |
| Rest and shade | Find a spot under a tree | Bedrooms, sit-outs, often AC rooms |
| Food | Packed lunch or nearby stalls | Kitchen, BBQ or caterer, depending on the farmhouse |
| Kids | Need constant watching in open crowds | Enclosed space; pool still needs supervision |
| Music and games | Limited by the venue and other visitors | Allowed within house rules |
| Cost | Free or low entry | Rental for the whole property, split across the group |
| Booking | Turn up | Book ahead; popular dates fill early |
Where a private farmhouse clearly wins
Mixed-age groups
Grandparents need a proper chair, shade and a clean washroom. Toddlers need a nap spot. Teenagers need something to do. A farmhouse covers all three in one place. Public spots rarely do. Our guide to three generations at one farmhouse has more ideas.
Celebrations
Cutting a cake, putting up a banner, or playing a slideshow at a public park is awkward and sometimes not allowed. At a farmhouse you can decorate and celebrate, within the house rules. See farmhouses for birthday parties.
Swimming in summer
When the city heats up between March and June, a farmhouse with a private pool is a far more comfortable day than a sunny park.
Women's groups and families wanting privacy
Many guests simply feel more at ease with no strangers around, especially in the pool.
Staying overnight
A public spot ends when it closes. A farmhouse can be booked for a night stay, with bonfires and stargazing after dark.
The same Sunday, two ways
At a public picnic spot
You leave early to beat the crowds and still circle for parking. Someone runs ahead to claim a patch of shade. Lunch is the packed puris and whatever the stalls have, eaten on a mat. The kids want to run but you keep calling them back because the space is open to everyone. By 2 p.m. the elders are tired, the nearest clean washroom is a walk away, and the sun has moved off your tree. You head home around 4, a little sunburnt.
At a private farmhouse
You arrive at check-in, park inside the gate, and the caretaker shows you around. The kids are in the pool within twenty minutes while two adults keep watch in turns. Grandparents settle into a sit-out with tea. Lunch is biryani you ordered ahead or food cooked in the farmhouse kitchen, at a proper table. After lunch there's a nap in an AC room for whoever wants one, box cricket for the rest. You cut a cake at sunset and leave when your slot ends, without having queued for anything all day.
Neither picture is wrong. The question is which one fits your group, your budget and the occasion.
Where a public spot might suit you better
- Very small groups on a tight budget. Two or three people may find a free park simply makes more sense.
- Spontaneous plans. If you decide at 10 a.m. to go out at 11, a public place needs no booking.
- Sightseeing focus. If the point is a specific lake or monument, go there. You can always pair it with a farmhouse nearby, for example Shamirpet's lake and deer park with a Shamirpet farmhouse.
Thinking about cost per head
The rent of a farmhouse looks large in isolation. Split across a group of 15 or 20, and set against what you'd spend at a resort day-out on entry, food and parking, it often feels reasonable. Weekend rates are usually higher than weekday rates, so a weekday booking can stretch your budget further. Check the live price on each farmhouse page and divide by your headcount. Our guide to splitting the cost helps you do it fairly.
Things a farmhouse still asks of you
A private property comes with responsibility:
- House rules on music, alcohol, pets, outside food and decorations vary by farmhouse. Read them before you book.
- Pools need an adult watching whenever anyone is in the water.
- You leave the place clean and respect the village around it.
- Some farmhouses take a refundable security deposit.

Frequently asked questions
Is a private farmhouse better than a public park for a family outing?
For mixed-age groups, celebrations or swimming, usually yes, because you get privacy, washrooms, rest areas and a pool. For two or three people on a tight budget, a park may make more sense.
Do other guests share the farmhouse during my booking?
No. Farmhouses on our site are booked as a whole, so the pool, lawns and rooms are for your group only.
Is a private farmhouse expensive?
The rent covers the whole property, so the cost per head drops as your group grows. Weekdays are usually cheaper than weekends; check the live price for your date.
Can we bring our own food to a private farmhouse?
Many farmhouses allow it, but rules vary. Check the farmhouse page or confirm on WhatsApp.
