The Farmhouse Grocery Checklist for an Overnight Stay
· 5 min read· by Farmhouses Hyderabad Team

The complete shopping list for a night at a farmhouse, sorted by meal, plus the small kitchen items that farmhouse kitchens often don't have.
Shopping for a farmhouse overnight stay is different from your weekly grocery run. Shops can be far from the property, the kitchen may be basic, and nobody wants to drive back to the highway at 10 pm for salt. The fix is a list sorted by meal, bought in the city the evening before or on your way out, with a short section for the kitchen basics that farmhouse kitchens often lack.
Use the checklist below, cross out what you don't need, and share it in your group's WhatsApp so everyone knows who is bringing what.
Before you shop: three things to confirm
- What's in the kitchen. Ask the host whether there's a stove with gas, a fridge, utensils, plates and glasses. Kitchens vary a lot between farmhouses.
- Food rules. Check whether outside food is allowed (it usually is), and whether there are any restrictions on non-veg or alcohol. These vary by farmhouse, so read the listing or ask on WhatsApp.
- Your meal plan. Decide which meals you'll cook, which you'll order or pick up, and whether a cook is available. Our guide to food options at a farmhouse helps you decide.

A typical overnight meal plan
Most overnight groups eat five times. Shop for each one, not for "the trip".
| Meal | Easy approach |
|---|---|
| Lunch on arrival | Picked up on the way, such as biryani or meals parcels |
| Evening snacks | Chips, fruit, corn, chai |
| Dinner | Barbecue, a one-pot curry with rice, or a caterer |
| Late night | Instant noodles, toast, leftovers |
| Breakfast | Something quick: upma, poha, bread omelette, cereal |
The checklist
Staples and spices
- Salt, sugar, turmeric, red chilli powder, garam masala
- Cooking oil, plus a little ghee or butter
- Ginger-garlic paste
- Tea leaves or tea bags, coffee powder, a small pack of milk powder as backup
- Ketchup, green chutney, pickle
For dinner
- Rice or rotis (ready-made rotis or parathas save a lot of time)
- Main protein: chicken, paneer or eggs, marinated at home if possible
- Onions, tomatoes, green chillies, coriander, lemons
- Dal or a ready-to-cook curry mix
- Curd for raita
For a barbecue
- Marinated chicken, paneer, mushrooms, capsicum, onions
- Charcoal and fire starters, if the farmhouse doesn't provide them (ask first)
- Skewers, tongs, a brush for oil, aluminium foil
- Corn on the cob and butter
New to grilling? Do a trial run at home with one batch of marinade so you know how long things take over charcoal.
For breakfast
- Bread, eggs, butter, jam
- Upma rava or poha with peanuts and curry leaves
- Milk (keep it cold) or long-life milk cartons
- Bananas and seasonal fruit

Snacks and late-night food
- Chips, namkeen, peanuts, biscuits
- Instant noodles, the undisputed midnight hero
- Popcorn if you plan a movie night
- Chocolates, and a cake if anyone is celebrating
Drinks
- Drinking water cans or large bottles; don't assume purified water is available in quantity
- Soft drinks, juice, buttermilk, lime soda
- Ice, bought as close to arrival as possible
- ORS sachets, especially in summer
If your group plans to drink, check the farmhouse's rules first, keep it moderate and make sure nobody drives afterwards.
The kitchen basics people forget
These cost little and save the evening. Many farmhouse kitchens have some of them, but it is safer to carry your own.
- A sharp knife and a small chopping board
- Can opener and bottle opener
- Lighter or matchbox
- Dishwashing liquid, a scrubber and kitchen towels
- Cling film, zip-lock bags and a couple of containers for leftovers
- Large garbage bags, more than you think you need
- Paper plates, cups and napkins as backup
- A cooler box with ice packs for the drive
Season-specific additions
Hyderabad's seasons change what you need, so adjust the list for the month you are going.
- Summer (March to June): double the ice and water, add watermelon, cucumbers, lemons for nimbu pani and extra ORS. Plan lighter dinners; heavy food in the heat makes everyone sluggish.
- Monsoon (roughly June to September): pack mirchi bajji ingredients or a bajji mix and extra tea for rainy evenings, plus a tarp or newspaper to keep dry goods off damp floors. Keep matches in a zip-lock bag.
- Winter (November to February): add soup packets, extra milk for hot chocolate or Bournvita, sweet potatoes or peanuts to roast at a bonfire if the host allows one, and marshmallows for the kids.
Festival weekends are another reason to tweak the list. A Sankranti trip calls for sesame and jaggery sweets; a Diwali stay wants sweets and dry fruits in the hamper.
Smart shopping tips
- Shop in the city. Farmhouses in Moinabad, Shamirpet, Keesara or Chevella can be a fair distance from big supermarkets. Village shops cover basics but may not have everything.
- Prep at home. Marinate, chop onions, make chutney. It saves time and space in an unfamiliar kitchen.
- Buy perishables last. Pick up milk, curd, meat and ice on your way out so they stay cold.
- Split the list. Assign sections to different people. One person per category avoids five packets of chips and no salt.
- Track costs. Keep receipts in one place if you are splitting expenses. Our guide to splitting farmhouse costs with friends has a fair method.
Leave the kitchen as you found it
Wash the vessels you used, wipe the counters, bag the garbage and take unopened groceries home. Caretakers notice, and a clean kitchen helps when the security deposit is checked at checkout.
