Friendship Day at a Farmhouse: Ideas for the Gang

Friendship Day falls in the middle of the monsoon. Here is how to turn it into a farmhouse day for the gang, rain or shine, with ideas that go beyond the usual bands.

Friendship Day in India falls on the first Sunday of August, and a farmhouse near Hyderabad is a great place to spend it with the gang: a private property for the day, your own pool and lawn, and nobody telling you to keep it down in a cafe. It is the one day a year you have a ready excuse to drag everyone out of their routines.

There is one catch. Early August is the heart of the monsoon in Telangana, so the plan needs to work whether it pours or the sun comes out. Here is how to build a Friendship Day at a farmhouse that holds up either way.

Who is "the gang" this year?

Friend groups in Hyderabad tend to overlap: school friends, college friends, office friends, the apartment cricket lot. Mixing them sounds fun but can split into cliques by lunch. Decide whether this is:

  • The core group of six to twelve who have known each other forever. A smaller, cosier farmhouse is enough.
  • A bigger mixed crowd of twenty or more. You need more lawn, more seating and a couple of planned activities to help people mingle.
  • Couples and kids included. Many old gangs now come with spouses and toddlers. Look for a kids-friendly farmhouse with a kids' pool and safe play space.

Planning for the August monsoon

A rainy Friendship Day can be the best one, if you plan for it. Things to look for and prepare:

  • Covered space. A sit-out, gazebo, verandah or large hall where the whole gang can sit together when it pours.
  • Indoor games. Carrom, cards, Uno, Pictionary on a whiteboard. Our list of indoor games for a farmhouse stay has plenty more.
  • Power backup. Countryside power cuts are common in storms. Ask whether the farmhouse has backup for lights and fans.
  • Pool caution. Get out of the pool when there is thunder or lightning, and check with the caretaker whether the pool is clean after heavy rain.
  • Driving. Roads near farmhouses can get muddy. Leave before dark if the forecast is heavy.

The upside: the countryside is green, the air is cool, and a plate of hot mirchi bajji while it rains on the lawn beats anything a mall can offer.

Ideas that make it about friendship, not just a party

Any weekend can be a farmhouse party. These small touches make it a Friendship Day you will talk about later:

  1. The origin story round. Everyone tells how they met one person in the group. Half the stories will be contested, which is the fun part.
  2. Friendship bands, upgraded. Bring plain thread and beads and have everyone make one for a specific person. Cheesy, yes. Kept for years, also yes.
  3. Letters in a box. Each person writes a short note to someone in the group. Read them aloud or hand them over quietly at the end of the day.
  4. Recreate an old photo. Dig up a picture from school or college and restage it on the lawn, same poses, same expressions.
  5. The rivalry match. If the group has an old cricket feud, settle it on the box cricket pitch. Many farmhouses have one.
  6. Playlist by decade. Each friend adds five songs from the year you met. Expect a lot of 2000s Telugu and Hindi hits.

Food the gang can make together

Cooking together is part of the fun on Friendship Day. If the farmhouse has a kitchen you are allowed to use, try:

  • A monsoon snack station: bajji, pakodi, corn on the cob roasted on the BBQ grill, masala chai in a big pot.
  • One "signature dish" per friend, brought ready or cooked on site, so lunch becomes a potluck of everyone's mother's recipes.
  • Biryani ordered from the city for the main meal, so nobody is stuck in the kitchen for hours.

Rules on outside food, cooking and BBQ vary by farmhouse, so check the farmhouse page before you plan the menu.

Day use or overnight?

Friendship Day is a Sunday, and most people have work on Monday, which pushes many gangs toward a day booking. If you want the full experience, a Saturday night stay into Sunday lets you have the late-night conversations and wake up for Friendship Day itself. Check whether a farmhouse for a night stay has enough bedrooms for the group before you commit.

Where to go

Pick a spot that is fair to everyone's commute. If the gang is spread across the west and the old city, Moinabad is a practical middle ground with the widest choice. If most of you live around Secunderabad, Alwal or Kompally, the Shamirpet and Medchal side is closer; for an east-side crowd, look at Ghatkesar. Splitting the cost evenly is usually simplest; our guide on splitting farmhouse costs with friends covers the tricky cases.

Getting everyone there (and back)

The hardest part of any gang outing is the convoy. Someone is always late, someone is always lost, and someone forgot the speaker. A few habits help:

  • Pick two or three meeting points in the city, one per side of town, and carpool from there. Fewer cars means less parking trouble at the farmhouse.
  • Share the farmhouse location pin in the group a day before, not while everyone is already on the ORR.
  • Give one person the job of checking in with the caretaker, so the gate is open when the first car arrives.
  • Agree on a leaving time in advance. Monsoon evenings get dark early and village roads are harder to drive in the rain.

A few ground rules for a good day

  • House rules on music timings, decorations, extra guests and deposits vary by farmhouse. Read them on the farmhouse page and confirm anything unclear on WhatsApp.
  • If adults are drinking, keep it responsible: nobody in the pool after drinks and nobody drives home after drinking.
  • Leave the place the way you found it. The caretaker will remember, and so will the next gang.
