When the Farmhouse Looks Different From the Photos
· 5 min read· by Farmhouses Hyderabad Team

Arrived and the farmhouse doesn't quite match the pictures? Here's how to tell normal differences from real problems, and what to do in the first hour.
You pull through the gate, the group spills out of the cars, and something feels off. The lawn looks smaller than it did online, the pool water is a different shade of blue, or a room you were counting on is locked. It happens with farmhouses near Hyderabad just as it does with hotels and holiday homes anywhere.
The good news is that most gaps between photos and reality are small and fixable, and the few that are serious can usually be sorted out quickly if you raise them the right way. This guide covers what to expect, what counts as a real problem, and how to handle it without spoiling the day.
Why photos and reality drift apart
Understanding the reasons helps you judge whether a difference matters.
- Wide-angle lenses. Phone and camera wide modes make lawns, pools and halls look deeper than they are. Corners stretch, distances grow.
- Season. A lawn photographed after the monsoon is greener than the same lawn in late May. Trees lose leaves, flower beds change.
- Time of day. Golden-hour shots flatter everything. At noon the same space looks harsher.
- Old photos. Furniture gets replaced, a gazebo gets repainted, a play area gets added or removed. Photos are not always updated every time.
- Staging. Lights, cushions or decor set up for a shoot may not be the everyday setup.
None of this is necessarily dishonest. It is simply how property photography works. What matters is whether the things you actually booked for are there and working.

Normal differences vs real problems
A quick way to sort what you are seeing:
| Usually normal | Worth raising immediately |
|---|---|
| Lawn looks a bit smaller or less green | Pool empty, dirty or unusable |
| Different cushions, curtains or furniture | Fewer bedrooms or beds than listed |
| Pool tiles look a different colour | AC not working in rooms you were told had AC |
| Garden less manicured than the photos | Box cricket, kitchen or a listed feature missing |
| Decor lights not set up | No water, no power backup when it was promised |
| Some wear and tear on outdoor furniture | Safety issues: broken railings, exposed wiring, loose pool tiles |
The right column is about function and safety. If something you specifically chose the farmhouse for is missing or broken, you have every reason to speak up.
What to do in the first 30 minutes
- Walk the property before unpacking. Check the pool, bedrooms, washrooms, kitchen and any feature you were promised. Five minutes now saves arguments later.
- Take dated photos and short videos of anything that is broken, missing or unsafe. These protect you and also help when the security deposit is settled at check-out.
- Talk to the caretaker first. Many problems, like a tripped AC breaker, a pool pump left off or a locked room, are fixed on the spot. Be polite and specific: "The AC in the second bedroom isn't cooling, can you check it?"
- If it isn't fixed, contact the booking team. Message on WhatsApp with your booking details, the photos and a clear description. Do this while you are still on the property, not the next day.
- Agree on the fix in writing. Whether it is a repair, an alternative room or an adjustment, get the outcome in a message so nobody remembers it differently later.
Raise it early, raise it calmly, and raise it with evidence. That combination resolves most issues faster than an angry phone call.
What you can reasonably ask for
Outcomes depend on the farmhouse and the issue, so there is no fixed rule. In general:
- A quick repair or reset is the most common fix for AC, pool pumps, lights and water.
- If a listed feature cannot be restored during your stay, it is fair to discuss an adjustment with the host or booking team.
- For safety problems, ask that the area be closed off or fixed before anyone uses it. Do not let kids near a pool or structure you are unsure about.
- Each farmhouse sets its own cancellation and refund terms, shown on its page. Read the cancellation policy so you know where you stand before asking for anything.
Avoiding the gap next time
Most surprises can be prevented before you pay.
- Read the listing text, not just the gallery. Bedroom count, AC rooms, pool size notes and house rules are usually written out. Our guide on reading farmhouse reviews and photos goes deeper.
- Ask for a recent photo or short video of the pool and bedrooms on WhatsApp. A request like "Can you send a current photo of the pool?" is normal and reasonable.
- Confirm the features that matter to you, in writing, before you book. If you need a working private pool for a pool party, say so.
- Check recent reviews for comments about cleanliness and maintenance, since those change faster than buildings do.
- Use a pre-payment list like our farmhouse booking checklist.
Leave a useful review afterwards
If the farmhouse turned out different from the photos, in either direction, say so in your review with specifics. "Pool is smaller than it looks but very clean" helps the next family far more than a one-word rating. It also nudges hosts to keep their photos current.
Find a farmhouse that matches its listing
When you are ready for the next trip, browse all farmhouses around Hyderabad, compare the photos with the written details, and check live availability and price on each page. A quick question on WhatsApp before booking is the easiest way to make sure what you see is what you get.

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for a farmhouse to look smaller than in the photos?
A little, yes. Wide-angle photos make lawns and pools look bigger. What matters is whether the bedrooms, pool and features you booked are there and working.
What should I do if the pool is dirty when I arrive?
Show the caretaker straight away and ask for it to be cleaned or treated before anyone swims. If it can't be fixed, message the booking team on WhatsApp with photos while you are still there.
Can I get a refund if the farmhouse doesn't match the listing?
It depends on the farmhouse's own policy and the issue. Raise it during your stay with evidence, and check the cancellation policy shown on the farmhouse page.
How can I check a farmhouse is up to date before booking?
Ask for a recent photo or video on WhatsApp, read the written listing details, and look at recent reviews for comments on upkeep.
