How to Read Farmhouse Reviews and Photos Before You Book
· 5 min read· by Farmhouses Hyderabad Team
Wide-angle pools, missing bathroom shots and five-star reviews that say nothing. How to decode farmhouse photos and reviews so the place matches what you booked.
The photos sell a farmhouse; the reviews tell you whether to believe them. Before you book a farmhouse in Hyderabad, spend fifteen minutes reading both with a slightly sceptical eye. You are not looking for a perfect property, you are looking for one that matches your group: the right pool for your kids, enough bedrooms for your night stay, a lawn big enough for cricket.
Here is how to read between the pixels and the star ratings.
Part 1: reading the photos
Start with what is missing
A good listing shows the pool, the lawn, every bedroom, at least one bathroom, the kitchen and the entrance. If a farmhouse has twenty pool shots and no bathrooms, ask why. Missing photos are not always a bad sign (some owners just photograph the highlights), but they are exactly what you should ask the host about.
Make a quick checklist as you scroll:
- Pool: main pool and kids' pool, if any, in daylight
- Bedrooms: how many, beds per room, AC units visible
- Bathrooms: attached or common, condition of fittings
- Kitchen: stove, fridge, utensils, if you plan to cook
- Outdoor: lawn, box cricket, seating, shade
- Approach: gate, parking, the road leading in
Understand wide-angle lenses
Most property photos are shot with a wide lens. Pools look longer, lawns look like stadiums and bedrooms look like suites. A useful trick: look for objects of known size, such as a plastic chair, a door or a person, and judge the space against them. If the pool has a reclining chair next to it, you can estimate its length in chairs.
Check the season and the time of day
Lush green lawns are easy to photograph after the monsoon. Golden-hour shots make everything glow. Neither is dishonest, but in April the same lawn may be patchier. If you are booking in summer, ask the host for a recent photo or a short video.
Look for consistency
Do the tiles, furniture and wall colours look the same across all pictures? A mix of very old and very new photos can mean the property has been renovated (good) or that some pictures are from somewhere else (not good). Our guide on avoiding farmhouse booking scams covers how to check whether photos appear on other listings.

Part 2: reading the reviews
Specific beats enthusiastic
"Awesome place, loved it!" tells you almost nothing. A useful review mentions something concrete: the caretaker helped with the BBQ, the pool was clean on arrival, the AC in one room was weak, the road for the last stretch is rough. Scan for these details rather than the star count.
Match the reviewer to your group
A bachelor group and a family with toddlers judge a farmhouse very differently. Note who wrote the review:
| If you are | Pay attention to reviews that mention |
|---|---|
| A family with young kids | Kids' pool, shallow end, cleanliness, caretaker support |
| A friends' group | Music rules, outdoor seating, games, how strict the timings are |
| An office team | Space for the whole group, parking, power backup, food arrangements |
| Older parents | Steps and levels, ground-floor rooms, bathroom condition |
Read the critical reviews properly
A three-star review is often the most useful one on the page. Ask two questions: is the complaint about something that matters to you, and did the host respond or fix it? A complaint about music cut-off times is irrelevant if you are a quiet family. A complaint about a dirty pool matters to everyone.
Watch the dates
Farmhouses change. A new owner, a renovated pool or a new caretaker can transform the experience. Give more weight to recent reviews than to anything from several years ago.
Part 3: check photos and reviews against the listing details
The listing itself, with guest limits, number of bedrooms, amenities, house rules and the live price, should agree with what the photos and reviews show. If the listing says six bedrooms and you can only find photos of three, or reviewers mention a music ban that the listing does not, clear it up before you pay. Amenities like a pool heater, box cricket or a music system can be seasonal or extra, so confirm on WhatsApp.
Part 4: what reviews and photos cannot tell you
Some things only a conversation can confirm. Photos do not show how strict the music timings are, whether the caretaker stays overnight, or how the last stretch of road looks after rain. Reviews rarely mention the current price, because farmhouse rates change with the season and the day of the week. For price, always rely on the live price shown on the farmhouse page for your exact date, not a figure quoted in an old review.
Also remember that house rules on outside food, alcohol, pets, decorations and extra guests vary by farmhouse and can change over time. If a review says "they allowed our DJ", that was one booking on one date. Confirm your own plans with the host on WhatsApp before you pay.
Questions to send the host before you book
- Can you share a recent photo or short video of the pool and one bedroom?
- How many beds are there for a night stay, and are mattresses provided for extra guests?
- Is the caretaker on site throughout our stay?
- Is the last stretch of road suitable for a small car?
- Are there any rules I should know that are not on the page?

Shortlist with confidence
Once you know how to read listings, shortlisting is quick. Start with a category that fits your plan, such as farmhouses with a swimming pool, kids-friendly farmhouses or luxury farmhouses, open two or three pages side by side, compare photos, amenities and rules, then check live availability and price for your date.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the farmhouse pool look smaller than in the photos?
Most listing photos use a wide-angle lens that stretches space. Compare the pool against objects of known size, like chairs or doors, or ask the host for a short video.
Should I trust a farmhouse with only five-star reviews?
Look past the stars to the details. Specific, recent reviews from groups like yours are more useful than many short, generic ones.
Can I ask the host for more photos before booking?
Yes. Genuine hosts are usually happy to share recent photos or a quick video of the pool, rooms and bathrooms on WhatsApp.
What if the farmhouse does not match the photos on arrival?
Take photos straight away and raise it with the host or the booking team immediately, before your stay begins, so it can be addressed.
